Q10: Writeroom for Windows, better than Darkroom

Q10 is a great alternative to Writeroom, on Windows. It lets you write in a clean, distraction-free environment, and it counts your words and stuff. It is very customizable and easy to use. It is much nicer than Darkroom, another similar program. Here is a screenshot:

Q10

If you click through the screenshot, you will see a great little bottom bar that shows you your document statistics. The only thing Darkroom does better is that it allows for window translucency, which can be helpful if you are using a resource and don't want to have to keep switching windows.

The best part about Q10 is that when you type, it makes typewriter sounds! It even has the classic "carriage-return" sound that we all know and love. It is a completely free download, and is very worth it. I am now using it as a draft editor for my writing.

Get Exposé on Windows XP, for free, without TopDesk: WinExposé

I am using an awesome program right now called WinExposé. It is freeware, and has all (I think) of the major features of Exposé on a Mac. One of the things I love about it is that it has live previews of window; if I am playing a YouTube video in Firefox or something, it will continue to play in its thumbnail form when I open WinExposé. It also supports keyboard input; for instance, this paragraph was typed while in thumbnail view (this feature is also available in Beryl on Linux). The only problem with keyboard input is that it doesn't let you switch programs that you are typing into unless you exit the thumbnail view first. Here is a screenshot:

WinExposé

WinExposé has a lot of customization too, which I like a lot. Perhaps the best thing is that it requires no installation; just save the folder where you want it to be, and run it from there. This means that it doesn't crap up your registry.

I would give you a link to download it, but the site seems to be down right now. I have uploaded it to my Google Page Creator, though (I hope the creators don't mind!), so here it is: http://ioannusdeverani.googlepages.com/winexpose.zip

Enjoy!!!

User Interface resources of Safari 3 Beta for Windows ripped

UPDATE: Here's the digg page. Please digg me.

I have ripped the user interface resources from SafariTheme.dll and SafariResources.dll and packaged them into a handy zip file.

They can be used for applications or msstyles, or whatever. To create this, I used Resource Hacker and Oscar's File Renamer. They are two really awesome free apps.

Here is the download: http://ioannusdeverani.googlepages.com/SafariResources.zip

Enjoy, everyone!

How to get rid of that nasty little square next to "Recent Items" in ViStart Beta 5

In case you haven't already tried it out, go to http://www.windowsxlive.com/ to try out ViStart Beta 5, which gives Vista functionality to your XP startmenu, with search, etc.

That being said, when I ran it, there was a nasty looking square symbol (the symbol you get when your computer spits meaningless glubber into space) to the right of the words "Recent Items".

I fixed it on my computer. Here's how you do it: open up the folder whereinto you downloaded ViStart; open settings.xml in Notepad or something. Where it says,

<option name="Recent Items     [nastysquare]" recentdoc="true" rollover="rollover\recent.png"/>

Just get rid of the square and all the spaces. Save. Restart ViStart. It should be all better!

New Windows Live Writer Screenshot

Check out the screenshot found in this post. I can't wait for the new Windows Live Writer!

New Windows Live Writer Screenshot

via LiveSide - Windows Live news and interviews by ScottIsAFool on Apr 30, 2007

You might remember that back at the start of March, Nathan Weinberg put a post up showing off the current internal build of Windows Live Writer. Well, since then, there was been nothing new that has been shown by anyone, until now. The Austrian MSDN blog has just posted a post on Live Writer development resources (including my own plugin template for Visual Studio), but they have shown a screenshot of them writing that post, which uses a newer version of Writer than we have previously seen:

So from this screenshot we can see that they have done away with the option to hide the menu bar (like you can do with Windows Live Mail desktop), moved around the weblog management, it's no long a drop down menu on the top right (as with previous builds), but next to the Tools button, and they have also added in a much needed link to easily add more plugins. It also looks like they have done away with the flair and Windows Live Search box they had.

As with the previous screenshots we had seen, the new build of Live Writer is looking very promising and will make what is already a great blogging tool even better.

Resizing Partitions from linux

OK, I have a pretty newbie-type question for everyone. I want to expand my Linux partition (it is only 10Gigs). I have plenty of disc space to cut into, but I want to know that by resizing it from something like the partition editor in Ubuntu Edgy will not format my Windows partition (my Windows partition is essential to me...).

I am pretty sure it would turn out fine, but I just want to make sure. So, could anyone please answer my question? Thanks a million!

Access your Windows partition from Ubuntu, safely

Now you can access your Windows partition and all your files safely from Ubuntu. Before, you could do it, but it was not safe (up till now, I had a 'look, don't touch rule', where I could look at files, but I wouldn't edit them, for fear of corrupting my ntfs partition).
